Rain, Rivers & Little Kicks

Where to Start…

Well… where do I start?
Truth is, not a whole lot has happened lately — but also, so much has.

The end of November saw me log on for some training as part of my leadership program, which was a really good reset and something just for me. December, though, was always going to be about bub.

We made the trip to the big smoke for our 20-week scan, and I’m happy to say bub is doing really well — sitting right around the 56th percentile. The OB was very happy with everything, which always helps settle the nerves. Bub was a little shy, so we didn’t manage to get any great photos this time, but we did get to see an open mouth and a little drink of fluid, which was honestly pretty amazing to watch.

Over the last couple of weeks, the movements have really picked up. Feeling those strong kicks and rolls has been unreal. It’s something I’ve always been excited for, but I didn’t realise just how much it would tug at my heart. It makes everything feel very real.

Christmas Day came with an early start — 4am early, which was a bit rude if you ask me — and someone was having an absolute party in there. That morning was extra special because it was Frank’s first-time feeling bub kick. We’d been trying for a few days, but I think someone was just teasing their daddy. Seeing Frank’s reaction made the moment even more special.

On the land front, we’ve been incredibly lucky with rain — about 220ml so far, which is a great start to the season. We’ve also been very fortunate to miss the big rain events. My heart really goes out to those around Julia Creek and Curry who have been absolutely smashed.

We’ve been flooded in since Christmas Day, so life has been pretty quiet around here. Lots of shed clean-ups, dump runs when we can, checking water in the river, book work, and a bit of study. I’m itching to mow the lawn, but I’d only bog the mower if I tried too early — the ground is still super wet.

The sun is trying to peek out today, so I’m taking full advantage and attempting to get some washing dry.

Other than that, I’ve been doing what I imagine every pregnant woman does — researching everything. Breastfeeding, labour, baby gear… trying to work out what’s actually important and what’s just clever marketing designed to make you spend money you probably don’t need to.

I’d love to start getting the nursery ready, but we don’t have any gear here yet — and we’re not going anywhere until the two rivers come back down. So, for now, it’s all happening in my head instead.

I’ll be honest — I’m struggling a little with decisions. My mind feels like a two-way street at the moment, constantly going back and forth.

So, I’ll throw it out there:

A little help from those who’ve been there…

What’s one piece of advice you’d give a first-time Mumma as she steps into motherhood?

What’s one baby item you’d genuinely recommend — the kind of thing that truly made life easier?

And baby showers… worth it, overhyped, or only if it feels right? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If you’ve walked this path before, I’d really love to hear from you.
What’s one thing you couldn’t live without as a new mum — and did you have a baby shower, or happily skip it?

Until next time,
Sunrise to Sunset 🤍
