Catching Up on the Past Week

Well, where did the last 11 days go? Who else feels like you blink and suddenly a whole week or month has disappeared? That’s exactly how I feel about the past week—we’ve been flat-out busy!

A little catch-up on things lately: we mustered all the steers, drafted them up, and trucked some out to the feedlot. It’s incredible how much weight the boys have packed on with all the rain we had in February—everything has just taken off, and the grass is going crazy. Speaking of rain, it’s coming down again today. Over the last couple of days, we’ve had 19mm at the house—a nice little drop to green up the lawn (which means I’ll be needing to mow again soon!).

The creek came up again, only to about knee-high, but it was nice to see it running. It was really dirty for a couple of days before settling into that beautiful clear flow. We took the dogs down to the river for a bit—not really a swim, just a sit in the water. Funny thing, though—the other morning at 5:30 am, the water was surprisingly warm, but by 10 am, it was quite cool. Bit of a shock to the system!

In other news, I’ve officially started my Diploma in Agriculture! Making steady progress, currently working through the WHS component. Unfortunately, I hurt my back while putting out some lick blocks the other week, so I’ve had to take things a little slower. I had a session with the amazing Jane, and wow, she worked wonders! If you’re ever in North Queensland and need an Emmett or Melt session, I highly recommend her—instant relief. I’ll add a link to her page for anyone interested.

I’m also super excited to be heading to Brisbane next week for my two-day training workshop as part of the Women in Agriculture Leadership Program. Can’t wait to meet the other 14 incredible women who received this scholarship, as well as our mentors and trainers. It’ll be great to connect with people in the industry who have similar goals and ambitions. I need to get around to packing my suitcase this weekend, as I head to Townsville on Monday before flying out early Tuesday morning. I’ll keep you all updated on how it goes and share everything I learn!

Back at home, I’ve been busy working on the veggie garden, trying to get the soil healthy again. Any tips would be amazing! The soil here is mostly sandy loam, so I decided to mulch rather than rush into planting. I put down a layer of hay and then added some hay/cow manure from the weaner pen to break down. I do have a couple of smaller patches where I’ll mix in some potting soil to help balance things out and hopefully plant some veggies soon. I’m not exactly a green thumb—I tend to kill plants—but surprisingly, I still have one avocado tree that I grew from seed!

If anyone knows of a good nursery in Townsville, let me know—I’d love to pick up some flower plants, and fruit trees while I’m there. I’ve also been making some great finds at the dump shop, picking up pots to fill with flowers and add a bit of colour around the cottage. Any suggestions for hardy flowering plants that do well in pots? I’d love to try lavender again, but last year’s attempt ended in disaster when I brought some home right before a heatwave.

Anyway, my coffee is nearly empty, and I’m off to attempt some baking—yes, baking! I’ve been feeding my sourdough starter, hoping to get a loaf going, but with this wet, muggy weather, it’s been slow to spring to life. No doubt it’ll finally be ready the day before I head away for a week!

Hope you’ve all been doing well.
